What Happens on Life in the UK Test Day

Knowing exactly what to expect on the day can take a lot of the nervousness out of it. Here's a realistic walkthrough of the process from arrival to result, so there are no surprises.

Before You Leave the House

Bring your booking confirmation and acceptable photo identification โ€” usually a passport or another Home Office-approved document, matching the details you used when booking. Arriving without valid, matching ID is one of the few things that can stop you from sitting the test entirely, even if you're on time.

Arrive at least 15 minutes before your scheduled slot. Test centres generally won't admit latecomers once the session has started, and you'll forfeit your fee.

Checking In

At the centre, staff will verify your identity against your booking and ID. You'll typically be asked to store personal belongings โ€” including your phone โ€” before entering the test room, since electronic devices aren't allowed anywhere near the exam itself.

Taking the Test

The test is taken on a computer at the centre. You'll answer 24 multiple-choice questions drawn from across the official handbook, with 45 minutes to complete them. That's roughly under two minutes per question on average, which is comfortable if you've prepared, though a few questions may need more thought than others.

Questions are presented one at a time, and you can typically move between them and review your answers before submitting, as long as you're still within the time limit.

After You Finish

Once you submit or time runs out, your result is generated automatically. Historically, candidates who don't pass usually only learn their overall outcome rather than which specific questions they got wrong, so it's worth genuinely understanding the material rather than trying to memorise your way through โ€” you won't get a breakdown to learn from afterwards.

If you pass, you'll receive confirmation you'll need to keep for your citizenship or settlement application โ€” treat this as an important document and store it safely alongside your other application paperwork.

If You Don't Pass

There's no penalty beyond needing to book โ€” and pay for โ€” another attempt. Most test centres require a short waiting period before you can resit. It's a good moment to go back over topics you found difficult using free resources like this site's practice questions and mock exams, rather than sitting the exact same preparation again.
